Why do I need it?

Health insurance is the only practical way to prepare for uncertain but potentially devastating medical costs. You may be healthy now, but accidents and sicknesses come when we do not expect them. Once an accident or sickness occurs, it is too late to purchase insurance protection. Health insurance not only provides money to pay for certain medical expenses, it helps preserve the money you have saved. Without health insurance a major accident or sickness could prevent you or your family from being able to pay for your education plans.

Despite your age and health, you never know when a serious injury or illness will strike. And if you don't have insurance, who will pay your bills? Do you have the money to pay $1,500 to set a broken leg? Are you able to pay $3,000 for a hospital stay? Insurance gives you the peace of mind that most of your medical bills will be covered in case something happens in the event of sickness or injury.

Insurance exchanges an unknown and potentially crippling expense for a known and budgeted premium expense. Insurance companies can do this by pooling the risks of large numbers of student and relying on statistical outcomes to cover all costs and make a reasonable profit. Individuals cannot "self-insure" because each expense is an all or nothing proposition.
